Norman Schauls, the son of Nick and Della Schauls was born in the beautiful northeast corner of Iowa at New Albin on March 9, 1937. He graduated from Immaculate Conception High School in Lansing, Iowa. Norman married Delores Magner at St. John the Baptist Church in West Ridge on September 28, 1957. Norman and Delores made their home in Waterloo, where they raised their five children, and now enjoy every opportunity they can to be with their 15 grandchildren. Norman worked for John Deere for 31 years before retirement, and Delores worked at Good Will Industries until she also retired in 1995.
For the past five years Delores and Norman have been attending classes every other weekend in preparation for his ordination. Deacons share in the official Church ministries of Word, Sacrament and service along with bishops and priests. The most characteristic ministry of the deacon is "service," particularly in the area of charity and social justice with the poor and powerless. Norman is responsible for the ministry of Habitat for Humanity here at Blessed Sacrament, and he will continue in this important service. As a member of Blessed Sacrament he has served as a lector and Eucharistic minister and has been a member of the Liturgy and Social Concerns committees. Norman and Delores are active in the marriage enrichment and support programs, First Tuesday and Marriage Retorno. An important service Norman has offered the parish is in his ministry as "Computer Chaplain." He is editor of the Blessed Sacrament Web site, the first Catholic web site in the state of Iowa, and some days he makes several trips from his home across the street to help the pastor and others as they fumble into the computer age.
Our parish is blessed as Norman and Delores join John and Sharon Herman and Jim and Lori Freet as deacon couples in service to our community. Let us support them and remember them all in prayer as they grow in their faith and in service to the church.
